There is no single "perfect smile."

Art & Science Working Together

Smile design is the process that combines art and dental science to enhance how your teeth, gums, and lips look together when you smile. Instead of just treating dental problems, smile design looks at the overall aesthetics—how your smile fits your face.

Smile design is a dynamic field with evolving trends that take into consideration: facial esthetics, lip dynamics, pink and white esthetics, and personality. Modern smile designers such as Dr. Martinez have a global understanding of the entire patient to design the perfect smile.

Our goal is not to create just perfectly white teeth, but a natural, balanced, and attractive smile that suits your face and personality.

Smile Design Process

The Smile Design process consists of the following steps:

  1. Initial Consultation
  2. Smile Analysis
  3. Digital Simulation & Mockup
  4. Treatment Planning
  5. Treatment
  6. Post-Treatment Care

1. Initial Consultation

The process begins with a thorough understanding of your needs and expectations. During this consultation, Dr. Martinez will ask:

  • Do you want natural, perfect Hollywood, or something in between?
  • What do you like/dislike about your smile?
  • Any functional issues (bite, wear, grinding)?

2. Smile Analysis

Dr. Martinez will examine your oral structure, teeth, and gums. Your face shape, lip structure, and overall facial aesthetics are also evaluated.

Next, Dr. Martinez will discuss your aesthetic expectations and provide information about the smile design process:

  • Tooth Proportions – shape, size, and color (width/height ratios)
  • Alignment and spacing of teeth
  • Midline (center of face vs teeth)
  • Smile line (curve of teeth vs lower lip)
  • Gum position and symmetry
  • Lip shape
  • Facial Proportion Management – Helps in managing the vertical height of anterior teeth, with 50% of the contact length between the central incisors, 40% between the central and lateral incisors, and 30% between the lateral incisor and canine.

3. Digital Simulation & Mock-up

You don't want to be guessing the outcome. You can experience your new smile before committing to the treatment.

Advanced imaging, such as the Digital Smile Design (DSD) concept, allows patients to visualize the result beforehand. A temporary mock-up can be applied to the teeth to test the look, feel, and function, allowing for final adjustments.

4. Treatment Planning

The "cosmetic" smiles are typically a combination of various procedures. Together with Dr. Martinez, you will determine the ideal treatment mix. The following treatment methods are commonly used in smile design:

  • Teeth Whitening: Lightening the color of the teeth makes your smile appear brighter and more aesthetic.
  • Porcelain Veneers: Thin porcelain shells applied to the front surface of the teeth provide a flawless aesthetic appearance.
  • Zirconium Crowns: Zirconium crowns offer both aesthetics and durability, providing a natural appearance.
  • Orthodontic Treatment: Crooked teeth or alignment issues are corrected with braces or clear aligners.
  • Gum Aesthetics: Excessive gum visibility or asymmetry is corrected through laser or surgical procedures.

5. Treatment

Treatment is done in the right sequence:

  • Invisalign or braces → for alignment
  • Whitening → for color
  • Veneers/bonding → for shape & symmetry
  • Gum contouring → for balance

6. Post-Treatment Care

After completion:

  • Night guards may be recommended (to protect work)
  • Regular hygiene visits maintain results

Key Principles of Smile Design

  • Proportion: Utilizing the golden ratio and principles of aesthetic dentistry.
  • Facial Harmony: Considering the patient's age, personality, and facial aesthetics.
  • Functional Stability: Ensuring that the design aligns with the bite to prevent future, more complex dental issues.

HOW FACE SHAPE IMPACTS SMILE DESIGN

Your face shape plays an important role in creating a smile that looks natural and balanced. Dr. Martinez tailors each smile design to complement your unique facial structure.

1. Oval (Long) Face

Goal: To create balance and fullness. Smile design for oval faces focuses on less vertical length and slightly wider-looking teeth to achieve a harmonious, proportionate result.

2. Round Face

Goal: To add length and definition. Softer, rounded edges combined with slightly longer teeth help create an elegant, elongated appearance that complements a round face.

3. Square Face

Goal: To soften strong jawlines. Less sharp corners and rounded tooth edges create a gentler, more balanced look that harmonizes with a strong square facial structure.

4. Heart-Shaped Face

Goal: To maintain a delicate, natural look. Gentle contours and smaller, softer tooth shapes complement the naturally tapered chin and wider forehead of a heart-shaped face.
